A sheltered bay next to Galle

Unawatuna is a curved, reef-protected bay a short drive from Galle Fort, and the shelter is the point — the water is usually calmer than the open beaches nearby, which makes it one of the more swimmable stretches of the southwest coast. It is also among the busiest, with restaurants and guesthouses close to the sand. The Japanese Peace Pagoda on the headland above the bay gives the best view along the coast.

How long to give it

Two to three nights, often combined with Galle rather than instead of it. Unawatuna is close enough to the fort to make either one a base for both, and Weligama and Mirissa are a short drive further east.

Season and crowding

The season is the southwest one, broadly December to April, which is also when the bay is at its most crowded. Outside those months the sea is rougher and the sand narrower. If Unawatuna feels too busy, Jungle Beach and Dalawella are within walking or tuk-tuk distance and are usually quieter.
