What we actually do

Trails of Lanka plans private tours in Sri Lanka for travellers coming from abroad. Every trip is a private vehicle with a driver-guide, accommodation arranged for you, and a route built around your dates rather than a fixed departure. There are no group departures and no shared coaches.

The site publishes tours as starting points rather than fixed products. A seven-day cultural route is a shape that works, not a contract: the stops, the pace, the hotel level and the length can all move before you commit to anything.

How a trip is planned

Planning starts from three things: the dates you can travel, how many of you there are, and what you actually want out of the trip. Those decide more than any tour name does.

• Season first. Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, so the month you travel decides which coast a route should end on. We would rather move your beach section than send you to a wet one.
• Distances second. The island is small on a map and slow on the road. We plan around realistic transfer times instead of fitting in one more region.
• Pace third. Two nights in one place is almost always better than one night in two, and we will say so if a route is trying to do too much.
• Then the detail: hotel level, vehicle size, guide language, and anything you have told us matters — a birthday, mobility needs, travelling with a toddler.

Driver-guides

The driver-guide is the single biggest factor in whether a private tour feels good, so it is the part we are most careful about. They are not just drivers: they handle the route, the timing, the entry logistics at each site, and the local context that turns a stop into something you remember.

A guide can be requested in any of 13 languages — English, Russian, German, French, Italian, Spanish and others — and the request is made when you ask for a quote rather than being a surprise on arrival. Availability in less common languages depends on the dates, and we will tell you honestly if we cannot cover one rather than substituting quietly.

If a guide is not working out, tell us during the trip. Changing one mid-route is possible and is far better than finishing a week you did not enjoy.

Safety and comfort

Private travel removes a lot of the risk that comes with unfamiliar transport: you are in one vehicle, with one driver who knows the roads, for the whole trip. Long transfers are planned with breaks, and we avoid the late-night driving that makes tight itineraries possible on paper.

Heat is the thing travellers underestimate most. Cultural sites are planned for early starts, because climbing Sigiriya at nine in the morning is a different experience from climbing it at one in the afternoon, and materially safer.

We recommend travel insurance covering medical treatment and cancellation for every traveller. We do not sell it and we are not advisers on it, but we would rather say so plainly than leave it unmentioned.

Support while you travel

Things do go wrong: a road closes, a hotel disappoints, the weather turns. Most of it is fixable in the moment and much harder to fix afterwards, so the useful thing is to tell us while you are still there.

The quote process, and why there is no checkout

This website has no payment page. That is deliberate rather than unfinished: a private tour has no single correct price until someone has read your dates, group size and preferences, so quoting one automatically would mean quoting a number we could not stand behind.

You send an enquiry with no payment and no card details. A person reads it and replies with a route and a price, usually within a day. You ask for changes, and the quote changes. A booking exists only when you have accepted it in writing and we have confirmed.

Prices shown on tour pages are honest "from" figures per person, and the largest things that move them are hotel tier, how many people share the vehicle, and the season you travel in.

What we do not claim

This site carries no customer ratings, no review counts and no awards, because we have none to show yet. Publishing invented ones would be straightforward and is exactly what we are not going to do.
