Why visit Haputale
Haputale is a quieter alternative to Ella for travellers who want mountain scenery with less tourist density.
Like much of the surrounding highlands, its modern travel role is closely tied to tea-country history and ridge-line viewpoints.

It is usually approached from Ella or Bandarawela and can be combined with Lipton’s Seat and central highland routes.

A ridge town with a view off the edge of the highlands
Haputale sits on a narrow ridge at the southern edge of the hill country, and on a clear day the land falls away towards the southern plains and, occasionally, the sea. Tea estates surround the town on all sides. Lipton's Seat, the viewpoint on the ridge above the Dambatenne estate where Thomas Lipton is said to have surveyed his holdings, is the walk most visitors come for.
How long to give it
One or two nights. Haputale is on the main hill-country railway between Ella and Nanu Oya, which makes it easy to include without a special detour, and it is quieter and less expensive than Ella. It also sits close to the Horton Plains access road.
Mist, cold and timing
The highlands are cool and often wet, and cloud frequently closes in over the ridge by mid-morning — which is the main argument for walking up to Lipton's Seat at dawn rather than later. Warm layers are needed at night year-round. The drier months in this part of the hill country are broadly January to March, though mist is possible in any season.
