Sri Lanka in 7 Days

How to structure a one-week first trip without trying to do the entire island badly.

Seven days is enough for a strong Sri Lanka first trip, but only if the route is selective. The usual mistake is trying to include too many regions and turning every day into transfer time.

Choose one backbone for the week

The cleanest 7-day routes usually commit to a cultural-and-hill-country backbone or a coast-first backbone. Mixing everything into one week looks broad on paper but usually feels rushed on the ground.

Use transitions as part of the trip

The Kandy-to-Ella train works because the transfer itself becomes a highlight. A strong itinerary looks for scenic transitions instead of seeing every transfer as dead time.

Leave space for traveller preference

A one-week trip feels premium when there is room for slower mornings, optional stops, and small personal adjustments rather than a fixed overpacked schedule.
