如何安排第一趟一周行程，而不是把整座岛都草草走过。
七天足以成就一趟出色的斯里兰卡首次旅行，但前提是路线必须有所取舍。常见的错误是塞进太多区域，让每一天都变成赶路。
为这一周选定一条主轴
最清晰的七日路线通常会选择人文与山区主轴，或是以海岸为主轴。把所有元素塞进一周，在纸上看起来很丰富，实际走起来几乎总是仓促。
让转场成为旅程的一部分
康提到埃拉的火车之所以成立，是因为这段路程本身就是亮点。好的行程会寻找有风景的转场，而不是把每次移动都当作浪费的时间。
为旅客的个人偏好留出空间
当行程留有较慢的早晨、可选的停留与小幅个人调整时，一周的旅程才会显得从容而精致，而不是一份僵硬又过满的时间表。
The slower version, for families and couples
The plan above has two travel days in it. If you are travelling with young children, or you simply do not want to move every night, drop one region rather than compressing all of them. Two good versions: stay inland and in the hills only, giving three nights around Sigiriya and Kandy and three in tea country, and skip the coast entirely. Or reverse it — four nights on one beach with a single overnight inland trip to Sigiriya. Both feel like a holiday. The seven-region version feels like a logistics exercise, and with a toddler it is genuinely unpleasant.
Private driver or public transport
Both work, and they suit different trips. Public transport is inexpensive, and the Kandy-to-Ella train is a genuine highlight rather than merely a way to move — worth doing whichever way you travel. But buses and trains connect towns, not sights, and the Cultural Triangle in particular is spread out: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa are not walkable from one another or from most hotels. A private driver-guide removes the daily problem of the last few kilometres, lets you start at dawn when the heat and crowds are lowest, and turns a transfer day into a day with stops in it. In one week, where every wasted hour is a larger share of the trip, that is the main argument for it.
What to remove first
When a seven-day plan is overloaded, cut in this order. First, the second coast — pick south or east, never both. Second, Nuwara Eliya as a separate overnight if you are already stopping in Ella; the two are close in character and one hill base is usually enough. Third, a safari bolted onto the end, because parks want an early start and a nearby overnight, and a rushed afternoon drive after a four-hour transfer is the version people regret. Fourth, Colombo as a sightseeing stop. It is worth a day on a longer trip, but in one week it usually earns its place only as an arrival or departure convenience.
What drives the cost
We deliberately do not publish fixed weekly prices, because a quote depends on choices you have not made yet. The variables that move it most: how many people share the vehicle, since a private car costs roughly the same for two travellers as for four; hotel tier, which is the largest single lever and can change a week’s total more than anything else; season, with the December-to-March peak on the southwest coast priced very differently from October; whether a safari is included, since park entry and a jeep are a distinct cost; and the number of long transfer days. Entry to individual sites is charged separately and set by the authorities that run them, so confirm current rates rather than budgeting from a figure found online.
Booking, packing and season
Reserved seats on the Kandy-to-Ella train are limited and popular, and they sell out well ahead in high season — book as early as your dates allow, and note that unreserved carriages exist if you miss out, though they can be very full. Pack for two climates: it is hot and humid at sea level and genuinely cool in the hills at night, so one warm layer earns its space. Bring modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples, plus socks, since shoes come off at religious sites and the stone gets hot. Sun protection matters more than a raincoat in most months. On timing, the southwest coast is at its best from December to February and the east coast from May to September, so the month you can travel should decide which coast the week ends on rather than the other way round.
